Perth, being a large retirement community, has a significant number of elderly with medical, social and/or emotional conditions that limits their thriving. Many older persons live at home, many alone, with the support of their friends and family. Many of them are vulnerable, isolated and in some functional difficulty, but intensely prefer to maintain themselves in their own home rather than in a nursing home. Many of them already get services at home, but are not able to receive sufficient help to maintain their health due to funding limitations, both personal and governmental. The burden of care often falls to those that love them: their immediate family and friends. What we are seeking to do at PEP (Perth Enrichment Program) is to build on that neighbourly support system by providing local, personal, specific care in a day program setting.
